Hi guys,
Last month's pages were posted up on the 11th September 2001. That was the day of the tragic events at the Twin Towers in the USA. I had been at work when the story broke and when I came home I realised how bad it was. I had finished the web pages the night before, and decided to continue with putting them on the web. We now have to come to terms with what happened and will have to see what the effects will be. I have had a look at John Davidson's web site, and he has made some interesting comments. Thanks John. As far as the rest of September is concerned, it has been quiet but busy. Busy at work, busy at home. Home is re-building the Patio, which has decided to try to revert to kit form. Also I have an interesting project in hand relating to last month's Pic of the Past. Details below with the answer. The rest of the month's news is listed by the pics below, so I don't have to repeat it. More next time!
David Hitchings.

I had no takers to answer the questions 'who, where and when. It looks like our Richard, but it is Gramps, my Grandfather, Charles Hitchings. It was taken in Jerusalem in the first world war, the year 1917 or 1918.

During August, Celia and I called on Edgar and Norah (Hitchings) in Southwick, and spent some time talking about the family. Edgar showed us some old negatives of photos taken by Gramps when he was in Jerusalem. Gramps had sent photos back home, but the ship they were on was sunk and the photos lost. He still had the negatives and Edgar had them. I volunteered the task of scanning them in on the computer so they could be stored long term and could be easily viewed. Easily ? There are over 200, one set of 100 taken in Jerusalem and the other set of 100 in Cairo. I am still working through them. The one above was a surprise, as it looks just like Richard Hitchings. The pictures will be put on to a CD when I have finished.

Report from Rosie on her trip. Greenland, Summer 2001
About the end of May my friend, Claire, offered me the chance to go to Greenland with her for a month to be her field assistant while she did her dissertation research. As I hadn't any other plans for August I thought I might as well go. Her dissertation was studying the surface melting of a glacier in relation to the weather. We were based in the west of Greenland, near Kangerlussuaq, and about 50km north of the arctic circle. The glacier in question was called the Russell Glacier and it was one of the many glaciers that make up the edge of the Greenland ice cap. It took us two and a half weeks to collect all the data we needed during which time we were over impressed by the glacier and all its features. These included the carving of the glacier, when large lumps of ice fell away from the side and floated off down the river, banging and bumping as they went. The other memorable feature was the melt water river which we had to cross in order to reach the glacier and which makes any of the rivers in this country seem warm! As we finished the field work ahead of schedule we took the opportunity to travel to Greenland's second largest town of Sisimiut on the coast. Unfortunately our luck with the weather ran out at this point and we had to spend much of our time sheltering from the rain. All in all it was a brilliant trip to a real wilderness area and it would be lovely to go back and explore some more."
Take Care Love Rosie

Bank Holiday This was the end of August, and there was a Viking Craft Fair at Wakehurst Place. We went along with Mum, Joan and Colin. 'Viking' is the theme for the fair, giving some people the opportunity to dress up. The pics below are to give a flavour of the occasion.

3 Chairs for Mumsie! Took my Mum to Eastbourne to buy some chairs for her room. Very good, and the room looks bigger with the new chairs and the way she has arranged them and the table. On the way back, we stopped on Beachy Head to check that it was still there. It was a bit cool and windy, but well worth the visit.

New Car. Visited Andrew & Mairead for a weekend, (the last in September.) Went with them to pick up their new car, a Rover 25. Note the new registration system now in use in the UK. (e-mail me if you want details.) Had lunch in Birmingham and then a look round the Art Gallery, got chucked out at closing time, and hadn't seen everything! On the Sunday, we went to Aston Hall, which is old and full of History. It was involved in the civil war in England when the Royalists and Roundheads were at loggerheads. A part of the banisters inside has a large lump missing, after being hit by a cannonball fired by Roundheads. (It's a long time to leave it without mending it, eh?) Some interesting pictures and furniture inside. As we drove away, crowds were walking along the road with maroon and blue scarves etc. - Aston Villa's ground is about half a mile away.

John Davidson has his own web site up and running, so I will let him tell you his own news. My Mum has given up driving due to problems with her eyesight, and she has sold her car to Jenny. Katie is now back at Uni in Newcastle, in different lodgings, and Rosie has started work in Edinburgh. She has e-mailed her address and phone number - if you don't have it, send me an e-mail. Dave Edwards has been on a great holiday, a walking tour in the Alps, around Chamonix. He was with a group on a planned route, travelling around 120 miles in 2 weeks. We have looked at his pictures and are jealous - it looks great. Did you know that Andrew is now working at Rover again? Well, I've run out of space again, so no comments. You are lucky, pictures are better to look at than my complaints. All the best, David Hitchings (e-mail if you want a better copy of any picture)
