Hi all, and welcome. Last month's pages covered 2 months and included loads of pictures. When I tested the site, it took ages to download from the web. I am now going to keep to monthly output, with less content, less pictures and easier loading. This might give me room for some comments, so I can sound off about something. Let me know if you have any problems. We have had a full month, including the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the World Cup (football, or Soccer if you like,) and Pam & Les's Golden Wedding. We have also had visits to Haywards Heath from Anne & Alex, Andrew & Mairead and Niamh. I have managed to keep up with jobs around the house too! Great News from Canada - Jill (Little) has had a baby boy, born 27 June 2002, 8 lb 8 3/4 ozs.He is called William Theodore - William is a name from his Grandpa, Theodore from Robert's family, . It was a natural birth at about 3.30pm. Both are 100% and doing well. Jill was thrilled to have had a natural birth without being induced and having drugs. ( Her first, Alex, was by Caesarean section.) Bill Corbyn has got a new job, as Construction Manager with the Halifax Harbour Clean Up project - a 4.5 year phased project with sewage Treatment Plants and other works including a 1km tunnel under the city. Details on the web under "Halifax Harbour Solutions" and www.unitedwater.com
All the best for now, David Hitchings 2 July 2002

Football Well, England didn't win the World Cup, but put in a good performance. It was only last year that the Manager walked out, leaving England needing to win 3 games just to qualify. We got a new Manager, raising a few eyebrows as he was not English. We qualified and got to the last 8. We were only beaten once, by Brazil, who went on to become World Champions. Makes you think - if we improve a bit for the next competition…….

The Queen's Golden Jubilee - with an extra day's Bank Holiday, the 3rd and 4th of June. Some may not agree with having a Monarchy, but the event was spectacular, with Concerts in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, processions and loads of pageantry. I'm sure Ma'am was impressed, and so were the million people in the Mall. We tried to do our bit by having a Jubilee Tea with Mum, Joan, Anne & Alex. Obviously we were thinking Jubilee, England, World Cup etc, the flag is good for both.

Comment The Monarchy
There has been a lot of discussion lately about whether we should have a Monarchy. There are arguments on both sides, and I must admit that the arguments against seem a bit oblique. The main case stated is that it is not democratic to have a Monarch who is not elected. (This is also stated for the House of Lords.) This sounds great until you think about it. Just because someone is elected doesn't mean that they are the best for a particular role. To be elected requires a person to have certain characteristic, in putting themselves forward and saying how good they are, promising what they will do, in order to create support. Don't think I am against democracy, I am in favour. We have our elected leaders to organise the Country and the framework within which we live our lives. We don't need to have another person or President

as well, who stands up to be elected in the 'Machoism' of the hustings. We have, in a way, voted that we want a Monarchy, and one which continues on a hereditary basis, by accepting it. The fact that this role has a completely different form of power is what makes it useful. The Monarchy gives the Country a sort of stability, one not available with an elected leader. We can have Parties in, Parties out, arguments about the Health Service and Education, Privatisation etc. and the Monarchy is still there. An elected leader would not ever get to a Golden Jubilee! On the other hand, do we need a 'class' system to maintain a Monarchy? More next time……..
